Meet the Principal

A Message from the Helm

Dear Newell Barney Middle School Parents and Guardians,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Newell Barney Middle School (NBMS), the home of the Buccaneers! Our school motto is: Believe, Achieve, Succeed. This motto is applied every day of the year as our staff and community BELIEVE that each student can ACHIEVE academically and establish social goals that will help them SUCCEED in life! Our goal is to encourage and nurture each student to reach or exceed his or her potential. We accomplish our goal through high expectations for our students, providing structure and help when things get tough and not accepting any excuses. Here is some additional information that will enhance your experience with NBMS.

  1. Parents must update their email and contact information by completing the health information form that will be sent home with your child the first day of school. Please return the completed form by the designated date stated on the form. The school uses your email information to keep you up to date on whatever is happening at NBMS. Please contact the school if you haven’t received the weekly activities email.
  2. NBMS offers many opportunities for parents and guardians to volunteer on campus. We have booster clubs, Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), or you can even join our Site Council. The purpose of Site Council is to represent and inform the community about what is happening at school. Members meet monthly to discuss activities and events as well as ways to raise money for various school activities. It’s a great way to be involved!
  3. NBMS is proud to have a rigorous curriculum that includes the Arizona State Standards and incorporates student mastery of the subjects. I encourage parents to stay involved in their children’s education by checking their child’s student planners and reviewing their child’s grades. It is also important for your child’s success that you make a daily effort to inquire what your child learned that day at school and check their student binder.
  4. Your child’s success at school also requires a quiet place to complete homework, check their planner for upcoming class assignment deadlines, and check their grades on a regular basis through an online program called Synergy Student Vue. Synergy also includes a portal called Synergy Parent Vue that allows parents to check their child’s grades any time of the day seven days a week. Please go to the district web page to create a Parent VUE log in, or contact the front office if you have questions.
  5. We are excited to continue with implementing Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) campus wide to provide opportunity for all students. AVID’s mission is to help prepare all students for college and career success. Students learn skills and behaviors for academic success such a note taking, organization, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading.
  6. Part of your child’s education is eCAP. This is an “educational career action plan.” eCAP requires your child complete a self-interest survey each year to determine careers they are interested in pursuing as they plan classes for their future. Parents will be able to review their child’s eCAP online. Students will be able to login and show their parents their individual plans.
  7. NBMS participates in the nationwide WEB Program, an organization whose sole purpose is to help sixth graders feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year of middle school. The WEB Program is a transition program designed to both welcome and support sixth graders by assigning them a 7th or 8th grade WEB leader as a mentor during this first year.
  8. NBMS has something for every student ranging from athletics to arts to various interesting and fun clubs. We feel all students need to have an opportunity to be involved with groups outside the classroom where they learn to function in a team environment as well as grow as individuals. Please review the NBMS web page for a list of extracurricular actives.
  9. I encourage you and your child to familiarize yourselves with the content in the NBMS family handbook. It is important your child attend school on a regular basis and arrive at school on time. School begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m. On early release days dismissal time is at 1:05 p.m. The school calendar is included on the district website. You may want to put many of the important school events on your own calendar along with an alert.
  10. Please take some time to browse through our NBMS web page. We’ve tried to include all the information you may need to know about our school. We want the website to be the first place parents turn to for information. We know you’ll like what you find!

I am looking forward to working with your child this school year.

Most Sincerely,

Mrs. Johnson, Principal

Denise Johnson
