Meet Our Principal

A Message from the Helm

Dear Newell Barney College Prep Parents and Guardians,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Newell Barney College Prep (NBCP), the home of the Buccaneers! Our school motto is Believe, Achieve, Succeed. We apply this motto every day of the year as our staff and community BELIEVE that each student can ACHIEVE academically and establish social goals that will help them SUCCEED in life! Our goal is to encourage and nurture each student to reach or exceed his or her potential. We accomplish our goal through high expectations for our students, providing structure and help when things get tough, and not accepting any excuses. Here is some additional information that will enhance your experience with NBCP.

  1. Parents must update their email and contact information by completing the health information form that we will send home with your child the first day of school. Please return the completed form by the designated date stated on the form. The school uses your email information to keep you up to date on whatever is happening at NBCP. Please contact the school if you haven’t received the weekly activities email.
  2. NBCP is consistently a top rated school in the area and in the state as a whole, and this is as a result of the hard work by the teachers, staff, parents, and students. The rigorous curriculum includes the Arizona state standards and incorporates student mastery of the subjects. I encourage parents to stay involved by checking their child’s student planners and reviewing their child’s grades on Synergy ParentVUE. It is also important for your child’s success that you make a daily effort to inquire what your child learned that day at school and check their student binder.
  3. This year, we are proud to be a national Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) demonstration school. There are only 175 AVID demonstration schools nationwide and nine in Arizona. We are the tenth. AVID’s mission is to help prepare all students for college and career success. Students learn skills and behaviors that will result in academic success such as note-taking, organization, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. You can find more information about AVID on our district AVID webpage and on the AVID website.
  4. NBCP offers many opportunities for parents and guardians to volunteer on campus. We have the NBCP Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), our site council, and we always need chaperones for field trips. The purpose of the site council is to represent and inform the community about what is happening at school. Members meet monthly to discuss activities, events, as well as ways to raise money for various school activities. It’s a great way to get involved!
  5. Your child’s success at school also requires a quiet place to complete homework, check their planner for upcoming class assignment deadlines, and check their grades on a regular basis through an online program called Synergy StudentVUE. Synergy also includes a portal called Synergy ParentVUE that allows parents to check their child’s grades at any time of the day, seven days a week. Please go to the district web page to create a ParentVUE login, or contact the front office if you have questions.
  6. Each year, your child will fill out an education and career action plan (eCAP) survey at the beginning of school. The eCAP helps determine potential careers your child may have interest in pursuing as they plan classes for their future. Students will be able to log in and show their parents their individual plans.
  7. NBCP has something for every student ranging from athletics to arts to various interesting and fun clubs. We feel all students need to have an opportunity to become involved with groups outside the classroom where they learn to function in a team environment as well as grow as individuals. Please review the Clubs & Activities page for a list of extracurricular activities.
  8. I also encourage you and your child to familiarize yourselves with the content in the NBCP family handbook. It is important your child attend school on a regular basis and arrive at school on time. School begins at 8:55 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. On early release days, dismissal is at 1:45 p.m. You can find the school calendar on the district Calendar webpage. You may want to put many of the important school events on your own calendar along with an alert.
  9. Please take some time to browse through our website. We’ve tried to include all the information you may need to know about our school. We want the website to be the first place parents turn to for information. We know you’ll like what you find!

I look forward to working with you and your child this year as we continue to be the best junior high school around.

Sincerely,

Mr. Aikins, Principal
